Alicante Road Safety

Spain can be very dangerous for residents of the UK. Over eight million UK citizens drive in Spain each year, says the Foreign Commonwealth Office. They also report that UK drivers have two times as much chance of dying in Spain as they do at home. It seems that people over the age of 55 are the ones who get in trouble the most, often getting lost or confused by driving on the wrong side of the road.

There are many things that one can do to prepare for their travels, and in many cases people forget to do these things. Always pack the necessary documents and drivers licence and registration, and have emergency numbers handy, especially the British Consulate.

There are some easy things you can do to prepare for your trip to Alicante, and to make the driving safer once you get there. Do a little research before leaving into the driving laws there; make sure you understand them. Do not drive when overly tired, and make sure to take breaks, as you will be more apt to make mistakes in a place you are unfamiliar with. Be sure you and everyone else in the vehicle has their seatbelt on. Do NOT drink and drive, and do not talk on your mobile while driving.

When hiring a car in Alicante, be sure you pick a company with a good reputation; cheap is not always a good thing. The cheap deals often turn out to be very expensive when all the fees are added on at the end of the trip. Also, these cheap cars tend to be less reliable, and could end up breaking down.

It is a very good idea to be careful of pedestrians when in Alicante. Remember, they are on vacation too, and could be not paying very much attention. The same holds true for you; while you are walking around, at night especially, be sure to follow the rules. Cross at designated points, and always look both ways before crossing. Wear bright clothes at night.

Finally, be careful when choosing a bus or coach. If the vehicle is not safe looking, do not get on. Also, just like in a car, always wear a seatbelt. Avoid public transport that is too crowded; this can result in injury or accidents.

Traveling to Alicante can be a wonderful experience. all you need to do to make sure nothing bad happens is to make sure you are prepared ahead of time, and be careful while there.
